Friday/December/16/2022

Welcome: Good morning. This storm has certainly been underachieving, a sad loss for some of us hoping for lots of snow. What happened are two things that caused more rain than expected. First is that last night warmer winds came into the region creating a tiny column of air above freezing that melted the snow right as it got to the ground. For some, overnight temperatures did not drop below freezing, this was not expected.

Next, this storm was looking like it was going to be more organized, but it is not organized. The reason the organization matters is that it effects how heavy the precipitation falls and the heavier the precipitation the more cooling in the air. So, because it was less organized we got lighter precipitation and less cooling from it.

These storms are hard to forecast, and I apologize to you all who were expecting a big storm, and who are disappointed on what has come into fruition. The positive is that the eastern parts of the Berkshires and Bennington County are seeing lots of snow. Also most of us should rap up the storm with light to moderate snow accumulations tonight. Here are the details…

Alert: A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Berkshires and Bennington County until 10:00 AM tomorrow.

Timing: Currently you may be seeing rain, a rain/snow mix, or snow. Whatever you are seeing should continue until this evening. Then if temperatures do drop below freezing tonight, as they are expected to do, we will all see a transition to snow. The snow should continue through tomorrow morning and be done by tomorrow afternoon.

Snow: Widespread snow is likely. For Bennington County I expect 6-12 inches of wet snow in total, with lower amounts right around Bennington and higher amounts near the mountains.

For the Eastern part of Berkshire County (east of Pittsfield) I expect 8-14 inches of wet snow in total, with higher amounts at high elevations. For the Western part of Berkshire County (Pittsfield and west) I expect 4-10 inches of wet snow in total. Lesser amounts can be expected for areas near Williamstown and areas near Sheffield. Higher amounts can be expected near the mountains.

Sleet: Not expected.

Freezing Rain: Not expected.

Rain: Widespread rain is likely. A few spots may reach near one inch of rain in total.

Thunder: Not expected.

Peak Wind: 5 to 25 mph, with gusts to 40 mph. Coming from the East.

Blowing/Drifting Snow: Not expected.

Snow Day Calculator: N/A

Hazards Summary: Some roads will dangerous to drive on. Isolated tree damage and power outages are possible where high snowfall amounts occur. Snow fall rates could be heavy at times tonight. Be prepared for multiple changeovers to snow during the day, but then changeovers going back to rain.

Anything Else: I hope you all stay safe. Please comment and like. Thank you. Have an amazing day. I hope all goes your way. So let today be your very best day. Cheers everyone!

Thursday/December/15/2022/PM UPDATE

Welcome: Good evening. I am giving an update on our storm. The forecasts are showing higher snow totals. Get ready everyone, because this will likely be a big one. Also remember it will be wet snow so do not hurt your back shoveling it all at once…

Alert: A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for all of Berkshire County and Bennington County. This Winter Storm Warning goes into effect 7:00 PM tonight and lasts until 10:00 AM Saturday.

Timing: By the end of this evening the snow should be moving into the area. It will snow heavily throughout the night into tomorrow morning. It is possible that snowfall rates may reach 2 inches per hour! By tomorrow late morning some of us will be a rain/snow mix while others will be all snow. Tomorrow night we all go back to snow with again high snowfall rates. It will snow early Saturday, but will likely be done by Saturday afternoon.

Snow: Widespread wet snow is likely. For Lenox and southwards I expect 6-14 inches of snow. For Pittsfield and northwards I expect 8-20 inches. Finally, I expect 20-36 inches on the highest of mountain peaks. This storm still has the potential to underachieve or overachieve.

Sleet: Not expected.

Freezing Rain: Not expected.

Rain: Scattered to widespread rain is likely. Less than an inch of rain is expected.

Thunder: Not expected.

Peak Wind: 10 to 20 mph, with gusts to 40 mph. Coming from the East.

Blowing/Drifting Snow: Isolated blowing/drifting snow may occur.

Snow Day Calculator: 78% chance of a snow day tomorrow.

Hazards Summary: Roads will dangerous to drive on. Isolated tree damage and power outages are possible. Snow will be hard to shovel. Finally, it will snow heavily at times so visibility may be reduced.

Anything Else: I hope you all stay safe. Please comment and like. Thank you. Cheers everyone!

Thursday/December/15/2022

Welcome: Good morning. Today will be a briefing-type post for the incoming potentially major snowstorm. I am going to be honest with you all. This storm is really difficult to forecast. There is high uncertainty in how much snow the valleys will have. I will continue to monitor the situation…

Alert: A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for all of Berkshire County and Bennington County. This Winter Storm Warning goes into effect 7:00 PM tonight and lasts until 10:00 AM Saturday.

Timing: Some widely scattered snow or rain may begin as early as this afternoon. As we move into the evening heavy wet snow will begin falling. This heavy wet snow will fall through the night. As we reach tomorrow morning the valleys will mix with or change to rain, while the high elevations will likely stay mostly snow. Everyone should change back to snow Friday night and this will continue until Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon the storm should be finished with our area.

Questions Remain: The challenging part to this storm is that the temperatures will be right around freezing, so a slight tilt above or below freezing may alter the entire event. All that I am certain is that if you live below 1000 feet you will likely see a rain snow mix. If you live between 1000 feet and 2000 feet it could go either way. Finally if you live above 2000 feet you should see mostly snow.

Snow: Widespread snow is likely. For Lenox and southwards I expect 4-12 inches of snow. For Pittsfield and northwards I expect 6-18 inches. Finally, I expect 18-24 inches on the mountain peaks. This storm has much uncertainty, snowfall amounts will vary from location to location.

Sleet: Not expected.

Freezing Rain: Not expected.

Rain: Scattered to widespread rain is likely. Less than an inch of rain is expected.

Thunder: Not expected.

Peak Wind: 5 to 25 mph, with gusts to 40 mph. Coming from the East Northeast.

Blowing/Drifting Snow: Isolated blowing/drifting snow may occur.

Snow Day Calculator: 76% chance of a snow day, as long as the forecast does not grow warmer. Some delays may also be possible.

Hazards Summary: Roads will dangerous to drive on. Isolated tree damage and power outages are possible. Friday morning, Friday night, and Saturday morning will be the worst times to drive. If lesser amounts of snow falls then impacts will not be as bad, but if maximum snow fall amounts occur impacts will be worse.

Anything Else: I hope you all stay safe. Please comment and like. Thank you. Have an amazing day. I hope all goes your way. So let today be your very best day. Cheers everyone!

Wednesday/December/14/2022

Welcome: Good morning. Today will be briefing-type post for the incoming potentially major snowstorm. It is currently looking like somewhat of an elevation dependent storm, but there is a chance that this will become a snowstorm for the valleys and mountains…

Alert: A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Northern Berkshire County and Bennington County, starting from 7:00 PM tomorrow and going until 7:00 AM Saturday. This watch does not include Southern Berkshire County, which is Lenox and southwards.

Timing: The storm will begin likely as snow by late Thursday evening. It will snow heavily through the night. By Friday morning some will transition to a mix of rain/snow, while others will stay snow. By Friday night all of us will likely go back to snow. Finally, everything moves out Saturday afternoon.

Snow: Widespread snow is likely. For Lenox and southwards I expect 4-12 inches of snow. For Pittsfield and northwards I expect 7-15 inches. Finally, I expect 15-24 inches on the mountain peaks. This storm has the potential to overachieve in mountains and under achieve in valleys.

Sleet: Not expected.

Freezing Rain: Not expected.

Rain: Scattered rain is likely. Less than an inch of rain is expected.

Thunder: Not expected.

Peak Wind: 10 to 20 mph, with gusts to 35 mph. Coming from the East Northeast.

Blowing/Drifting Snow: Isolated blowing/drifting snow may occur.

Snow Day Calculator: 76% chance of a snow day for at least 4 schools on Friday.

Hazards Summary: Roads will not just be slippery, roads will be extremely dangerous. In some areas driving in the predicted weather could be a threat for your life. Isolated power outages may occur. Isolated tree damage is possible. Finally, if this storms expected snow totals go up some more, then I would advise not traveling at all Friday.

Anything Else: I hope you all stay safe. Please comment and like. Thank you. Have an amazing day. I hope all goes your way. So let today be your very best day. Cheers everyone!
